Kubilay Uner
Composer

The combination of radically different ways of thinking in and about music has always been at the core of Kubilay Üner's compositional work.

He continually experiments with new forms of musical expression and regularly designs and builds custom sounds and instruments. He also composes music for many commercial projects, including eight feature films and two television pilots. In addition to writing for concert, theatre and film, Kubi has acted as a record producer and arranger for a range of artists, from soul legend Bobby Womack to Mexican-American chanteuse Perla Batalla.

Active in the Los Angeles contemporary music scene, he runs a series of composer salons for the LA chapter of the American Composers Forum, where he is member of the Advisory Council. These stylistically diverse salons are yet another expression of Kubi's main artistic creed: vibrant, exciting, relevant art can flourish only in an atmosphere of aesthetic integration.

Born and raised in Munich, Germany, he began his involvement in music as a rock and roll bass player. He studied composition with Johannes Fritsch and Klarenz Barlow at the State Academy of Music in Cologne, Germany; with Luigi Nono at a Centre Acanthes workshop in France; and with Mort Subotnick, Fredric Rzewski and James Newton at CalArts. He earned his Master's Degree in 1991, and now works as a freelance composer and producer in Los Angeles, California.
